Sweatshirt Design for Carnegie Mellon University's 11785 Introduction to Deep Learning Course

Carnegie Mellon University's 11785 Introduction to Deep Learning course is renowned for its intensity and popularity among students. With a large enrollment, the course relies on a dedicated team of over 25 teaching assistants (TAs) each semester, comprised of peer students who have previously excelled in the class.

In response to the need for a unified identity, we crafted a distinctive design for the course's sweatshirts. Central to the design is the class mascot—a whimsical hippo—engaged in tuning a guitar. This playful depiction pays homage to the common student misconception of "hippo-parameters" instead of the technical term "hyperparameters" often encountered in deep learning.

Just as deep learning algorithms continuously fine-tune parameters in large networks, our design humorously parallels this process with the image of a hippo tuning a guitar. It encapsulates the spirit of camaraderie and intellectual curiosity fostered within the course while adding a touch of whimsy to the learning journey.
A second design showcases the Computer Science Department's mascot—a dragon—alongside the course's name written in 20 different languages.
